As a Certified B Corporation, we hold our values close to all business decisions. Whether it’s our audacious goal to be the best agency for the world in the next ten years, committing to carbon neutrality by 2030, or building an inclusive and regenerative economy, we’re ready to make an impact every day we come into work. While the inclusive economy challenge that we participated in last year through B Lab has been retired, we didn’t want to let that stop us on our way to continuous innovation and accountability.

So, with a combination of the the UN’s SDGs and goals from our B Corp Impact report, we put together our goals for this year. They ended up falling into three buckets:

  • Community: How can we as a digital marketing agency serve our community? How can we create more equity for our services?
  • Environment: How are we taking care of the planet we all live on? What can we do to reduce our impact?
  • Workers: How are we empowering and supporting our team? How can we listen and create opportunities that help them along their path? And, how do we center an inclusive culture for underestimated and underrepresented folks?

Community

As a business, Mad Fish has always been committed to giving back and staying involved in our community. However, in the past few years, we’ve redoubled our efforts and launched a pro-bono program, working with those in our communities who have been underserved in our industry. Last year, we donated over 82 thousand dollars in services to folks like PDXWIT, New Avenues for Youth, and Village Gardens

In addition, we’ve added VTO as a company benefit. This year, we’ll be expanding this with a grant program and company sponsored volunteer days. Our goal is to donate at least 2.5% of working hours. As a team of 17, this is significant, but we know it’s imperative as we continue to build a more inclusive economy. These initiatives support the following SDGs:

  • Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10): Reduce inequality within and among countries
  • Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16): Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels

Mad Fish Digital Social Impact

Environment

This is an area we haven’t had a lot of control over in the past, as Mad Fish Digital rented our building. We did implement a composting program, have reduced our reliance on folks like Amazon, and try to minimize our impact, but there’s only been so much we can do.

This year, we purchased our space. We’re looking forward to making environmental improvements and learning more about how we can begin the process of becoming climate neutral. We’ll be using a myriad of tools to calculate our carbon footprint, evaluate our water usage, and increase our use of renewables. Our work in these areas will support the following SDGs:

  • Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6): Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
  • Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7): Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
  • Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12): Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
  • Climate Action (SDG 13): Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Workers

For workers, we have some specific goals this year. They’re reflected both by our B Corp goals of reducing attrition, continuing our commitment to equitable pay and benefits, and increasing our training around equity, diversity, and inclusion in our workspace. Our work in these areas will support the four SDGs below:

  • Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3): Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
  • Gender Equality (SDG 5): Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8): Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
  • Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10): Reduce inequality within and among countries

How is your business choosing to make the world a better place this year? It might be as simple as offering a living wage, inclusive benefits, and creating a better place to work. Or, as ambitious as taking on climate chaos or infrastructure and policy. If you want to work together on any of the SDGs above, feel free to give us a shout on our contact page. We’d love to tackle this together.
