Here at Mad Fish, we’re all pretty into coffee. While we frequently enjoy it in the office, our flexible working schedule and distributed team mean that we are welcome to work remotely from coffee shops around our cities, and we all have favorites. Combining great food, fast Wi-Fi, and awesome atmosphere, these are a few of our favorites in the Portland area. If you try one, make sure to let us know how it was.

This literary pun of a coffee shop is a local haven, drawing punks, college students, and locals together to work, play, and drink amazing coffee. The friendly atmosphere and unpretentious nature of the shop makes it stand out from Portland’s coffee scene which, while unparalleled, is sometimes a little painfully hip. We suggest grabbing a chocolate croissant or bagel with hummus, a cup of drip coffee served in one of their eclectic mugs and getting to work.

See See Motor Coffee

If you love café racers, this is the coffeehouse for you. Decorated with motor-themed décor and sitting adjacent to the motor company store, See See Coffee offers an airy, light space with delicious coffee and food. They serve Stumptown and have a breakfast burrito that comes with a green sauce I could basically drink. Enjoy!

Cathedral Coffee

Cathedral is a locals only kind of place. During the week, they have savory and sweet baked goods that pair perfectly with the locally roasted coffee they serve. During the winter, cozy up in one of the velvet chairs by the bookcase, in the summer, sit at the bar in front of the open glass garage door. You’ll be sure to enjoy the atmosphere. Bonus: their music isn’t too loud + it’s usually an amazing mix. Big ups to the DJ baristas.

Seastar Bakery

Seastar Bakery is a warm little spot in NE Portland. That warmth is created by the wood fire oven at the center of the space they use to whip up toast and breakfast plates in the morning and pizzas at night. The staff is friendly and open to regulars hanging out to get work done and meet. On busy mornings you may have to share a table and make a friend but the internet is great and the coffee is self-serve which is lovely when you need a quick warm-up between tasks.

Dapper and Wise

This buzzy location on Division is perfect for great coffee and focused work. We’re big fans of the inventive drinks and accommodating seating. They have a great outside area when the weather is nice, and easy access to some of the best food Portland has to offer on Division street. Plus, in the summer evenings local pop-up milkshake artisans takeover and provide Late Shake. This is hands down one of the best places to grab dessert during Portland’s summer months. Enjoy!

This place is great if you need to get some writing or non-internet work done. You can also connect to their Wi-Fi but it blocks many sites, so this is more a focused work environment. I craft blog posts, write strategies, and do overall planning when I’m here instead of churning through online tasks, but it can be a deal breaker if everything you do requires the internet and you don’t have a Xfinity login. Bonus: the best breakfast sandwiches, biscuits, and tasty seasonal drinks around. The lunch isn’t bad either, so get comfortable and chow down.

We hope this list inspires you to try a new coffee shop for your remote work, or even just grabbing a great drink and snack. Here’s to discovering gems in our hometowns.
