We’re so excited to welcome our newest client strategist, Jess Martinez! She joins the team from sunny San Diego (we’re hoping Portland hasn’t scared you too much yet!). She’s sharing her favorite new spots around town, an enviable bucket list, and how she ended up choosing Mad Fish Digital! We’re so happy to have you, Jess! Welcome to the team.

Where did you go to school?

University of San Diego – Go Toreros! I also studied abroad for a semester in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

What did you major in?

International Relations

Where are you from?

I was born in San Diego, but lived most of my life in Mariposa, CA near the foothills of Yosemite National Park. I spent a few years in Watsonville, CA and ultimately wound up in San Diego.

Favorite PDX spot?

Outdoors – Forest Park

Food – Boke Bowl

Drinks – Pope House

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Eat – whether it’s trying a new restaurant, checking out a food-related event, or cooking up a new recipe.

Favorite podcast (or media organization if you don’t have a show in particular)?

I actually can’t work and listen to a podcast at the same time, and I don’t have much of a commute, so no ‘favorites’ for me. However, I really enjoyed Joe Rogan’s interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson on his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.

Bucket list item(s).

  • Step on 7 continents – only 2 more to go!
  • Drink a beer in an old bar in Ireland
  • Take a river cruise down the Amazon in Brazil
  • 3-day hike into Machu Picchu
  • Take an eating tour through Italy
  • Have a picnic in the Swiss Alps
  • Slurp ramen at the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum in Japan

What’s your passion project?

Maintaining my tiny little ‘garden’, which is really only a few plants but it’s tough!

Why did you pick Mad Fish?

In my interview I asked my interviewers why they chose Mad Fish. In one way or another all of them hit on the company sticking to their core values throughout the years. My dad always says, “Do what you say you’re going to do”, but that’s not always the case in the business world. Before my interview I was attracted to the company’s values from reading about them online, but hearing that they’re actually implemented straight from employees’ mouths was important to me.

Favorite genre of music to work to/link to your favorite Spotify playlist to listen to at work?

Two kitties standing next to each other

I like it all – reggae, country, 2000’s punk, trendy hits, jazz vibes.

Fun fact about yourself.

When I was in high school, I participated in the People to People International program and travelled to Italy and Greece as a student ambassador. I was immediately bitten by the travel bug!

If you have a pet, send us a picture of you with it! Or of it! ☺

My fur-sons are Scout (left) and Bean (right).

What do you add to the team outside of work?

An adventurous and outgoing personality. Knowledge of upcoming food events and more cat photos than anyone (and no one) could want.
