It’s hard to escape consumer messages the weekend after Thanksgiving. From Black Friday to Cyber Monday we’re inundated with messages encouraging us to shop till we drop. While we can all appreciate a great sale, we are a little more excited about Giving Tuesday – a movement to kick start the charitable season of the year with donations to organizations that help our communities and world.

Mad Fish is embracing Giving Tuesday this year by contributing to local and worldwide organizations dedicated to making the world better for people in our communities. We strive to be both genuine and collaborative not only with our team members and clients, but within our community as well. We’ve compiled a list of five organizations that Mad Fish employees support, but we’d love to hear your favorites as well. Want to find an organization in your community? Check out Giving Tuesday’s site to find local programs that need your help.

Direction Service

“For nearly 40 years, Direction Service has been helping people with special needs and their families live the fullest lives possible. The staff at the organization (which includes my dad) provides information, resources, counseling, and all manners of assistance to children and families in Eugene and the surrounding areas.

It provides an amazing service to families in my home town. We have been able to support their work for the last six years and I am always moved by the level of commitment they give to those they work for.” – Ben Herman Donate

Innovation Law Lab

Innovation Law Lab works where the threats are greatest. They support individuals who would otherwise be most vulnerable in immigrant detention centers across the United States. In 2016, they helped secure freedom for over 99% of their clients, more than 30,000 women and children. You can support their cause and help others gain freedom from detention centers while supporting fair immigration practices across America.

“I support Innovation Law Lab because the threat to those they support has never been greater. Everyone deserves fair judicial treatment, and they are working to provide that.”– Giselle Donate

Know Your City

From walking tours to Oregon History Comics, from Youth Print PDX to countless community forums (ok, maybe not countless, but you know what I mean), Know Your City works hard to make sure people have a place to plugin and learn about the history, culture, and civics of Portland and the larger region.

“On a more personal note, I find that KYC has bolstered me with a unique opportunity to engage members of my community around difficult subjects, such as racism. It can be hard to know what to say or do to have an impact these days, but KYC has given me the context, the language, and the guts to start speaking up on a more regular basis.

In addition to being an educational and placemaking organization KYC attracts diverse leader- and membership. I truly believe this is because the work the organization does is needed, sincere, and meaningful; giving voice to often dismissed communities.”– Ashe Donate

Dress for Success

Dress for Success is committed to empowering women to achieve independence economically with a support network, professional attire, and development training to help women do well and succeed in work and in life. They strive towards a world where women don’t live in poverty, and are working every day to help women break the circle of poverty.

“Dress for Success’s vision is “…a world where women do not live in poverty; are treated with dignity and respect; and are strengthening their families and shaping their communities.” Economic independence is a key to realizing this vision. Poverty often affects women more than most and the effects are long-lasting, to the women and their families. Helping women in need with proper attire, interview coaching, support programs, strategies to help nurture professional growth, and more, Dress for Success gives women more than hope. They provide solutions. Many of us have experienced tough times in our lives. Working with Dress for Success is my way of honoring those who have helped support me. I invite you to read some of the stories from women who have benefited from this organization.”  – Jasmine Paul Donate

Malala Fund

“I was introduced to Malala and her story by my twelve-year-old niece last year. Malala’s book had her so fired up – I had to go out and read it for myself (we also went and heard her speak this past August). Malala Yousafzai’s story is one of empowerment and strength for girls around the world.

Her organization advocates for resources and policy changes to ensure that girls get the opportunity to complete 12 years of safe, quality education.  For my niece, myself and for the next generations, I really love what she is doing. #yesallgirls”– Corrie Herman Donate

Q Center

Q Center is a staple for LGBTQ+ people in Oregon. It offers classes, meet-ups, resources, and a safe space for individuals to come together and support their communities. Q Center helps those in Portland celebrate diversity, equality, visibility, and community building.

“As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I know how important it is to feel seen and be a part of a supportive community. Q Center provides people a place to express themselves, gives them resources to help make their lives easier and more open, and provides support to those who are dealing with unwelcoming environments and dangerous situations. I highly recommend checking out what they do!” – Giselle Waters Donate

Christmas Family Adoption

“Since 2002, the Christmas Family Adoption Foundation (CFAF) has helped to provide gifts, clothing, and necessities to families in need. They work with recognized agencies and caseworkers to connect with families in the Portland-metro area to help make Christmas a time of real celebration for families.

Once the team at Mad Fish heard about CFAF, we all knew we wanted to contribute to this wonderful organization. This has also brought us all even closer together knowing we are supporting our community. If you’re unable to Adopt A Family, there are other ways you can support CFAF. Learn how you can contribute today!” – The Mad Fish Digital Team Donate
